These eight lines were
written in the 10th century
by the medieval physician & scientist Rhazes, known in Islam
as Muhammad ibn Zakariya
al-Razi.
“When
shall it be within thy power
To grasp the good things God doth shower
Though they be but a span from thee,
If
all thy nights in revelry
Be passed, and in the morn thou rise
With fumes of drinking in thine eyes
And, heavy
with its wind, ere noon
Returnest to thy drunkard’s boon?”
He also wrote :-
“It therefore behooves
the intelligent man to beware of drink, and to keep it in its proper place, namely that which is here indicated, fearing it
as he would fear one who aims to rob him of all his most prized and precious possessions”.
